Hey, dog lovers! It's no secret that our dogs hold a big piece of our hearts, we adore them in all of their canine glory. For the original poster of this thread, writing down the best memories he shared with his beloved late pup is a wonderful way of coping with the pain of loss. This exercise inspired OP to turn to Reddit to learn more about his fellow dog lovers' favorite dog books, stories, and memories. We came across this wholesome thread and simply had to stop to appreciate all of the heartwarming canine appreciation going on here.

    ifba_aiskea ⚫8h ago My Life in Dog Years by Gary Paulsen is a memoir written through the perspective of the dogs he's had in his life. It's not a grand story or anything, it's mostly a bunch of anecdotes about his dogs but it's very sweet and is very well written.

Everything is beautiful, adventurous, until it's not. We had to put my first dog down a few months later, which is why it resonated with me so much.     I still cannot read or watch a movie about a dog. It rips me to shreds every time and gets me in a bad thinking cycle, where I will fixate on my dogs in a very unhealthy manner. Reddit can also be a trigger with all of the pet groups I'm in but I've learned to limit my time and only read posts if I'm in a good mindset.

He was a veterinarian in the English countryside in the 1930s-50s and wrote many autobiographical books about his life as a vet and the animals he loved and cared for. There's a collection stories, "James Herriot's Dog Stories", which fits what you're looking for but in all honesty each of his books is brilliant. I would recommend starting with "All Creatures Great and Small" which is the first

    He wrote many stories about a particular doggie- client named Tricki, a very spoiled Pekingese, who was my favorite recurring character in the books. Herriot writes so much character into the animals featured in his stories, be it a ornery cow or a beloved cat, you can clearly tell how much love and respect he holds for members of the animals kingdom.

Besides the classics (add Marley and Me!), A Dog's Purpose series (W. Bruce Cameron) is my favorite. I love the idea of a dog trying to find what its purpose is, and I love the intense loyalty aspect in the series... the idea that your dog reincarnates and follows you in life is something else. Homeward Bound is also fantastic. I only saw the movies, but they're base

    If you'll let me mention movies, too, Red Dog, Hachi(ko), and Togo are based on real dogs and their stories. All fantastic (especially the first two... again, hits on that loyalty, but in real dogs!). Honestly, there are many great books and movies that stuck with me in some way... too many to name.
